Family Vacation

1. Plan your family vacation budget, adding up transportation, accommodation, dining and entertainment expenses.

2. Make all the necessary reservations, such as hotel rooms, airline and car rental reservations well a head of time.  Use a discount booking engine such as Hotwire to get the best deals.

3. Find out what your family is looking for in a vacation. Does everybody want to relax on a beach, hike a mountain, visit a national park, play at a water park, go shopping or visit museums and cultural sites.  A family vacation is about time together and meeting the interests and needs of your specific family.  What one family would find boring another would find an adventure.

4. Establish how far you want to travel and the means of transportation. Will you be traveling by plane, car, train or by
boat?  Some times the fastest method of getting there is not the funnest or the best.  Some of our favorite vacations involve taking boats or ferries.

5. It may be a good idea to purchase travel insurance in case you need to cancel your trip, especially when traveling with young children.  Make sure there is a level of flexibility in your arrangements.

6. Make a shopping list of all the items that you have to purchase before you go. Making that perfect last-minute swimsuit purchase can be a nerve-racking experience.

7. Narrow down your choices to a couple of vacation destination that can satisfy most of your vacation needs.  Let the kids weight in and take ownership of the vaction.  Some times the planning and thought of the vacation is as rewarding as the actual experience.

8. Find out about hotels and resort choices in the area. Make sure that they offer the particular facilities that your family is looking for, such as a swimming pool, kid's programs or a spa. This is also a good time to find out about the hotel's reservation and cancellation policy.

9. Remember to book golf tee times, spa treatments, activities and special tours. Call your resort to confirm dining reservations.  Some locations are kid friendly, others are not.  Plan accordingly.

10. Finally, one of the most important things to remember when planning your family vacation is that vacations are supposed to be fun. Focus on spending time with your family and not on over planning the daily activities.
